9/28/09 Another vantage point, to show the extreme size and scope of the project. The stone in the front, will be his horse.
9/28/09 A bit more of the sculpture, see the machinery on the top? That's how big it is.
9/28/09 This is Crazy Horse. He was a Lakota Chief and the story behind this sculpture is heartwarming, proud, generational and a testament to the American Indian. For a brief recap: A sculptor, Korczak, Sc., who worked on Mt Rushmore with Borglum, was approached by Indian Chiefs and asked to create a sculpture of one of their heroes, Crazy Horse. He was a unifier among tribes and the Chiefs wanted "the white man to know that the red man had heroes too". Mount Rushmore would fit in Crazy Horse's hair, which has yet to be completed, but is behind his head, flowing in the wind. They have raised money from private sources and will not accept federal money. They bought federal land, and turned around and traded the land they purchased for this land here. They joked (not really a joke) that they had to buy land to trade it for land that the white took from them. There are plans for a university and medical center for American Indians. It is so powerful, to say more would take away from what they are doing.
9/28/09 Mount Rushmore from a distance....still so very impressive, in some ways more so.
7/28/09 Mount Rushmore seen through a tunnel!! There are several tunnels in the Black Hills National Forest, designed to see Mt Rushmore through them. It's truly amazing that the design incorporated this feature, so the tunnels frame the mountain.
