9/26/09 The Badlands, SD.
9/26/09 Here are the beginning of the Badlands, SD. Truly an awesome sight. You feel as if you have left this country and have taken a trip to the moon. The sediment is colored with fossil remains and the history is this area was a sea millions of years ago and as animals die they sink to the bottom of the sea and their fossils create layers on the sea floor. Tektonic plates then moved and shifted and the water drained off and the area became of all things - a rain forest full of vegetation and wildlife. Then winds and a very dry climate eliminated the rain forest and over time that and erosion created what you see in these pictures.
